Near to my heartGreat adventure stories featuring an intriguing protagonist。 Solomon Kane is a complex， driven， fanatical hero who makes no provision for the flesh。 Perhaps he veers close to the edge of madness at times， after all he is an instrument in the hand of the Most High God -- a deity who is righteous and relentless。 Much as I love Conan， Kane is my guy。

Such a great character！ Being entirely encompassed in short stories it needs to be character driven。。。。。。and it is！ Solomon Kane is a legitimate Bad A**。 In a way he sets my mind to Hoid （Cosmere fans know）。 Quick， hitting stories， definitely worth reading。

If you can ignore the racism of the time， this is a good read。 I did enjoy some of the stories and the poems were pretty fab。

The Solomon Kane character， avenging do-gooder and REH's first S&S hero， and his world are， I think， less richly conceived than the more popular （and less morally upright） Conan， yet served as effective vehicles for Howard's early adventure and dark supernatural story ideas。 I picked a handful of these stories to get a feel for them， and while reading I found myself always hoping to find that same unbridled， raw exuberance and passion Conan exudes that caused me to initially fall in love with RE The Solomon Kane character， avenging do-gooder and REH's first S&S hero， and his world are， I think， less richly conceived than the more popular （and less morally upright） Conan， yet served as effective vehicles for Howard's early adventure and dark supernatural story ideas。 I picked a handful of these stories to get a feel for them， and while reading I found myself always hoping to find that same unbridled， raw exuberance and passion Conan exudes that caused me to initially fall in love with REH， but came away disappointed for the most part。 As far as Puritan heroes go Solomon Kane is probably as exhilarating as they come。 Unfortunately， that's not saying much。Skulls in the stars （3。0）Red shadows （3。0）The hills of the dead （3。5）The footfalls within （3。5） 。。。more

Me han sorprendido gratamente estas aventuras de Salomon Kane。 Su autor， Roberto Howard， fue el inventor de Conan el Cimerio y a lo largo de su vida escribió verdaderas obras maestras de la fantasía y el terror。 No debemos olvidar que este hombre escribía hace nada más y nada menos que un siglo， por lo que sin duda podemos afirmar que era un adelantado a su tiempo。El último relato es el único en el que no aparece Salomon Kane， pero igualmente es un relato interesante。Recomiendo el libro。

Hay ideas muy interesantes y al final el tema del mal se explora más o menos bien， pero se hace incómodo por cómo trata ciertos temas。 Cosa que no pasa en los relatos de Conan。Me tiene desconcertado。

The stories of Solomon Kane， from what I can tell， serve as a bridge between the penny dreadfuls， and adventure novels of the 19th century， and the fantasy， adventure novels that rose to prominence in the 20th century， and are still going strong today。 The character of Solomon Kane is an interesting one。 A somber puritan， with a binary view on morality， and a strong code of conduct， one can see the massive influence Kane has had on many of pop culture's greatest heroes。 A stoic knight of vengean The stories of Solomon Kane， from what I can tell， serve as a bridge between the penny dreadfuls， and adventure novels of the 19th century， and the fantasy， adventure novels that rose to prominence in the 20th century， and are still going strong today。 The character of Solomon Kane is an interesting one。 A somber puritan， with a binary view on morality， and a strong code of conduct， one can see the massive influence Kane has had on many of pop culture's greatest heroes。 A stoic knight of vengeance， shades of Kane can be seen in many of the popular characters of the later pulp era， including the Shadow， who once stood atop as the most popular hero that pulps have ever seen。 For a more contemporary example， one need not look further than Batman， a dark knight， with a strong， binary view of morality， operating outside the law and following their own private code。 It is hard to say whether the towering popularity of Batman would exist， if not for the foundation that Solomon Kane laid。 Moreso than the influence they've had， the stories featured in this book are eminently entertaining。 Robert E。 Howard's signature style， which many have tried and failed to imitate， shines through in these stories more so than any others， as the stories are primarily made great by the gothic， dark atmosphere。 Unfortunately， the tales are a product of their time and place。 They suffer from the thing which most pulp fiction suffers from， namely repetitive plots， thin characters， two-dimensional villains， and very， VERY， outdated representations of native African populations。 Once a reader has delved about halfway through the book， the way the story goes can be easily predicted。 Kane comes face-to-face with evil， Kane is tricked by the enemy， Kane gets his second wind and defeats the enemy， vanquishing the evil at hand。 Still， repetition can be forigiven， as long as the repetitive story is an interesting one， told in an exquisite style and language。 。。。more

Χάουαρντ έχει διηγηθεί τις περιπέτειες εξίσου ενδιαφέροντων χαρακτήρων。 Ένας εξ αυτών， και μάλιστα ο πρώτος χρονικά που δημοσίευσε ο Χάουαρντ， είναι ο Σόλομων Κέιν， ο Πουριτανός εκδικητής， ο προστάτης των αδυνάτων， ο ορκισμένος εχθρός του Κακού。Έχω αναφέρει ότι σκοπεύω να γράψω για όλες τις ιστορίες τού Χάουαρντ που διαβάζω。 Επιλέγω λοιπόν να ξεκινήσω με τον Σόλομων Κέιν， τον πρωτότοκο τού Χάουαρντ， με τις ιστορίες του να γράφονται μεταξύ του 1927 και του 1930 και να δημοσιεύονται κυρίως στο θρυλικό αμερικάνικο περιοδικό Weird Tales。 Εννιά διηγήματα， μερικά μικρά άλλα μεγαλύτερα， πέντε ανολοκλήρωτες ιστορίες， και τρία ποιήματα αποτελούν το υλικό που άφησε πίσω του ο Χάουαρντ για τον Σόλομων Κέιν όταν αυτοκτόνησε το 1934 σε ηλικία μόλις 30 ετών。 Αν πρέπει να χαρακτηρίσουμε με μία λέξη το είδος στο οποίο ανήκουν οι ιστορίες με τον Σόλομων Κέιν， αναμφίβολα θα επιλέγαμε την λέξη περιπέτεια。 Αν γίνουμε πιο κιμπάρηδες και πάμε στις δύο λέξεις， τότε διαλέγουμε ηρωική φαντασία。Ο Σόλομων Κέιν είναι Άγγλος και Πουριτανός （κίνημα εντός του Προτεσταντισμού） και περιδιαβαίνει την υφήλιο κατά τον 16ο και 17ο αιώνα， ψάχνοντας και ξεριζώνοντας το Κακό σε οποιαδήποτε μορφή του。 Πρόκειται για έναν Εκδικητή， έναν ορκισμένο εχθρό τού Κακού， που θα κυνηγήσει ανελέητα τους πειρατές που απήγαγαν μια νεαρή κοπέλα， τους ληστές που κατέκαψαν ένα ολόκληρο χωριό， τους δουλέμπορους που αιχμαλώτισαν κάποιους άτυχους ανθρώπους， τα απόκοσμα πλάσματα που τρομοκρατούν την αγγλική ύπαιθρο， και τα αιμοδιψή τέρατα που καταδυναστεύουν την αφρικάνικη ζούγκλα… Οι περιπέτειές του τον φέρνουν από το αγγλικό Torktown και την γενέτειρά του Devon， στα γαλλικά βουνά και στον γερμανικό Μέλανα Δρυμό， σε χωριά κανίβαλων και σε ξεχασμένες προϊστορικές πόλεις στην Αφρική， μέχρι και στην μακρινή Παταγονία τής Νοτίου Αμερικής。 Το αφρικάνικο στοιχείο όμως είναι το κυρίαρχο， με τις περισσότερες και τις μεγαλύτερες ιστορίες να διαδραματίζονται στην αινιγματική και ανεξερεύνητη εν πολλοίς την εποχή εκείνη Αφρική。 Τι ξέρουμε για τον Κέιν πριν τον… αναλάβει ο Χάουαρντ; Υπηρέτησε σε πολεμικά πλοία （Hawk of Basti）， όπου και τα έβαλε με τους οθωμανούς πειρατές （The Footfalls Within）， ήταν παρών στον θάνατο τού Sir Richard Grenville （The Return of Sir Richard Grenville）， κατάγεται από το χωριό Dove （Solomon’s Kane Homecoming） και είχε κάποια σχέση με μία Bess （στο ίδιο）。 Όσο για την εμφάνισή του; Ψηλός， αδύνατος， μυώδης， με μαύρο μανδύα， χλωμός και απόμακρος， με το χαρακτηριστικό του πλατύγυρο καπέλο， και – μετά το Hills of the Dead – το μαγικό ραβδί τού αρχαίου βασιλέα Σολομώντα。。 Βασικό χαρακτηριστικό τού Κέιν είναι ότι εκτός από περιστασιακές εξαιρέσεις λειτουργεί μόνος του， αν και υπάρχει μία περίεργη αναφορά στο The Blue Flame of Vengeance/Blades of the Brotherhood για κατασκόπους…Οι ιστορίες τού Κέιν κατατάσσονται σε τέσσερις κύκλους， βάσει της γεωγραφίας τους。 Ο πρώτος σχετίζεται με τις περιπέτειές του στην Αγγλία （Skulls in the Start， The Right Hand of Doom， The Blue Flame of Vengeance/Blades of the Brotherhood， και Solomon’s Kane Homecoming）， ο δεύτερος με το πέρασμά του από τον Μέλανα Δρυμό （Rattle of Bones， The Castle of the Devil， και Death’s Black Riders）， ο τρίτος με την Αφρική （Red Shadows， The Moon of the Skulls， The Hills of the Dead， Wings in the Night， The Footfalls Within， The Children of Asshur， και The Return of Sir Richard Grenville）， ενώ ο τέταρτος με τον Νέο Κόσμο （The One Black Stain και Hawk of Basti）。Όλες οι ιστορίες είναι γρήγορες， με δαιμονιώδη ρυθμό， ισχυρό το στοιχείο τής περιπέτειας， και άφθονη δράση。 Σε άλλες υπάρχει έντονο υπερφυσικό στοιχείο – δαίμονες， τέρατα， φαντάσματα -， ενώ σε άλλες οι εχθροί είναι απλοί μεν， δαιμονικοί δε άνθρωποι。 Παρότι ο Χάουαρντ έχει γράψει περιπέτειες και με πολλούς άλλους ήρωες， με γνωστότερο τον Κόναν τον Βάρβαρο， οι ιστορίες τού Σόλομων Κέιν ξεχωρίζουν υφολογικά， έχουν δική τους ταυτότητα。 Αρκετές θα μπορούσαν να χαρακτηριστούν και ως ιστορίες τρόμου， σε μερικές βλέπουμε και μαθαίνουμε για προϊστορικούς πολιτισμούς και τις πόλεις τους， και κάποιες λίγες σου βγάζουν ένα αίσθημα επανάληψης。Εκτός από τις πρωτότυπες ιστορίες τού Χάουαρντ， ο Σόλομων Κέιν έχει φιλοξενηθεί και σε πάμπολλα κόμιξ （Marvel και Dark Horse）， graphic novels （μία συμπληρωμένη εκδοχή τού Κάστρου του Διαβόλου από άλλο συγγραφέα είχε κυκλοφορήσει και στα ελληνικά）， ενώ έχουν βγει ακόμα και σχετικά επιτραπέζια παιχνίδια και παιχνίδια ρόλων （The Savage World of Solomon Kane）。 Το 2009 κυκλοφόρησε και η ταινία Solomon Kane， με τον James Purefoy στον πρωταγωνιστικό ρόλο， η οποία παρά τις αδυναμίες της， την μη αξιοποίηση καμίας ιστορίας τού Χάουαρντ και τις αλλοιώσεις που έγιναν στον χαρακτήρα， προσπάθησε να αποδώσει ένα σκοτεινό κόσμο και να υφάνει μία ιστορία σχετικά με την καταγωγή τού Κέιν。 Θα έλεγα πως και το δημοφιλές βιντεοπαιχνίδι Bloodborne είναι εν πολλοίς ενεπνευσμένο από τον χαρακτήρα， τον κόσμο， και τις ιστορίες τού Σόλομων Κέιν…Διάβασα τις ιστορίες τού Κέιν από το εγγλέζικο βιβλίο The Savage Tales of Solomon Kane （Del Rey， 414 σ。， 2004）， που περιέχει τα άπαντα όλα τού Κέιν， μαζί με την νεκρολογία τού Χάουαρντ από τον Χ。 Φ。 Λάβκραφτ， καθώς και πάμπολλες εκπληκτικές ασπρόμαυρες εικονογραφήσεις αισθητικής Λοχαγού Μαρκ από τον Gary Gianni！ Μπορείτε να το βρείτε είτε από BookDepository/Amazon είτε από ελληνικά βιβλιοπωλεία όπως η Άγνωστη Καντάθ。 Στα ελληνικά έχουν κυκλοφορήσει περίπου οι μισές ιστορίες από τον Αίολο με τίτλο Κόκκινες Σκιές。Πάμε να δούμε τώρα όλες τις ιστορίες που έγραψε ο Χάουαρντ για τον Κέιν μία-μία （σχεδόν όλες βρίσκονται δωρέαν στο αυστραλιανό Project Gutenberg）:- Skulls in the Stars （18 σ。， Weird Tales， 1928， υπάρχει στην ελληνική έκδοση τού Αιόλου）: ο Κέιν είναι καθ’ οδόν προς το χωριό Torketown， στο οποίο οδηγούν δύο δρόμοι。 Όταν οι ντόπιοι τού λένε πως ο ένας δρόμος είναι πολύ πιο σύντομος αλλά καλύτερα να επιλέξει τον άλλον， αποφασίζει να ερευνήσει το θέμα。 Ωραία ατμόσφαιρα， ισχυρά στοιχεία θυσίας， εκδίκησης， και δικαιοσύνης， και… φαντάσματα。- The Right Hand of Doom （10 σ。， Red Shadows， 1968）: ένα καταπληκτικό σφινάκι， με τον Κέιν σε περιφερειακό ρόλο， με τον νεκρομάντη Roger Simeon να επιλέγει έναν ανορθόδοξο τρόπο εκδίκησης από τον άντρα που τον πρόδωσε στις αρχές… Ισχυρό στοιχείο μαγείας…- Red Shadows （44 σ。， Weird Tales， 1928， υπάρχει στην ελληνική έκδοση τού Αιόλου）: ο Κέιν βρίσκεται τώρα στην Γαλλία και πέφτει πάνω σε ένα ετοιμοθάνατο κορίτσι， θύμα μίας δράκας κλεφτών。 Ορκίζεται να εκδικηθεί την δολοφονία τού κοριτσιού και καταδιώκει τον Le Loup και τους άντρες του， από μια σπηλιά στα γαλλικά βούνα μέχρι την πυκνή αφρικανική ζούγκλα και χωριά κανίβαλων… Εδώ κάνει την εμφάνισή του για πρώτη φορά ο αφρικάνος σαμάνος Ν’Λόγκα…- Rattle of Bones （12 σ。， Weird Tales， 1929， υπάρχει στην ελληνική έκδοση τού Αιόλου）: ο τίτλος μού θυμίζει το χωρίο από το Κατά Ματθαίων （ιγ’: 49-50）， Εκεί θέλει είσθαι ο κλαυθμός και ο τριγμός των οδόντων… Έχουμε μεταφερθεί πλέον στον γερμανικό Μέλανα Δρυμό。 Ο Κέιν μαζί με έναν άλλον ταξιδιώτη καταλύουν σε ένα ερημικό πανδοχείο， με πολλά και σκοτεινά μυστικά… ΦΟ-ΒΕ-ΡΟ- The Castle of the Devil （8 σ。， Red Shadows， 1968）: ανολοκλήρωτη ιστορία， με τον Κέιν πάλι στον Μέλανα Δρυμό να συναντάει τυχαία και να ταξιδεύει μαζί με τον άγλλο John Silent。 Καθ’ οδόν， μιλάνε για τον διαβόητο βαρόνο Von Staler και το πώς καταδυναστεύει τους αγρότες。 Όταν συναντούν το κάστρο του， γνωστό ως το Κάστρο του Διαβόλου， ο Κέιν κινάει κατά ‘κει… Δυστυχώς εκεί ολοκληρώνεται η ιστορία， έχει κυκλοφορήσει όμως μία ολοκληρωμένη εκδοχή της από άλλο συγγραφέα σε graphic novel （και στα ελληνικά）。- Death’s Black Riders （4 σ。， The Howard Collector #10， 1968）: πάλι Μέλανας Δρυμός， πάλι ανολοκλήρωτη ιστορία。 Ο Κέιν συναντάει μερικούς παράξενους καβαλάρηδες και… κόβεται εκεί。- The Moon of the Skulls （74 σ。， Weird Tales， 1930， υπάρχει στην ελληνική έκδοση τού Αιόλου）: η πρώτη μεγάλη ιστορία τού Κέιν， εξ ολοκλήρου στην μαγευτική Αφρική。 Καθώς ο Κέιν βρίσκεται στα ίχνη μιας απηγμένης αγγλίδας， ανακαλύπτει μέσα στα βάθη τής ζούγκλας μία περίεργη πόλη， δημιούργημα ενός πολύ παλιού πολιτισμού… Καταπληκτική ιστορία， θυμίζει ευχάριστα Κόναν。- The One Black Stain （6 σ。， The Howard Collector #2， 1962）: ποίημα για την δίκη-παρωδία και κατόπιν εκτέλεση τού Sir Thomas Doughty στην Παταγονία。 Εμφανίζεται και ο θρυλικός εγγλέζος πειρατής Sir Francis Drake， ο άνθρωπος που μετεσχημάτισε την ισπανική αρμάδα σε κολυμπηθρόξυλα。- The Blue Flame of Vengeance/Blades of the Brotherhood （46 σ。， Red Shadows， 1968）: στην Αγγλία， φοβερή ιστορία με πειρατές， γεμάτη δράση και μονομαχίες και με σπαθιά και με μαχαίρια… Ερημώδεις ακτές， υπόγεια κελάρια， και παραθαλάσσιες στοές… Και με την παράξενη αναφορά σε κατασκόπους τού Κέιν… Καταπληκτικό！- The Hills of the Dead （32 σ。， Weird Tales， 1930， υπάρχει στην ελληνική έκδοση τού Αιόλου）: πίσω στην Αφρική， όπου ο Κέιν έρχεται αντιμέτωπος με βρικόλακες… Μόνη του βοήθεια ο Αφρικάνος σαμάνος Ν’ Λόγκα αλλά και το Ραβδί του Awesome straight adventure and nostalgic old timey feel！ This was a good read of Solomon Kane as he bumps around early Eastern America， South America， and Africa， basically， wandering into cool stories。 Kane wasn’t as I thought he would be but I was completely not disappointed。 I hope some entertainment company picks up this property。

As a fantasy reader， I found this book engrossing and fun - RE Howard paints a vivid picture in his short stories submitted to the Weird Stories magazine， however， that's exactly what this book is - a collection of short stories submitted to a magazine。 Each "beginning" of the short story is essentially a re-introduction to Solomon Kane and I understand why it's happening。。。 but it doesn't make it any more fun to read over and over。 Combine that with the fact that a number of "fractured" stories As a fantasy reader， I found this book engrossing and fun - RE Howard paints a vivid picture in his short stories submitted to the Weird Stories magazine， however， that's exactly what this book is - a collection of short stories submitted to a magazine。 Each "beginning" of the short story is essentially a re-introduction to Solomon Kane and I understand why it's happening。。。 but it doesn't make it any more fun to read over and over。 Combine that with the fact that a number of "fractured" stories appear here。 They're very well written。。。 but don't end。 To my understanding， other writers have come in and finished these stories， but they are not included here - I'd have almost preferred an acknowledgement of the new author be added with the ending or these fractional stories be omitted entirely。 Lastly， this is very much a series of stories written in the 1930s - I'm always one for context， especially when reading older stories， but a significant portion of the stories take place in Africa。 I'll commend Howard for some of how he handles things - but when the bar is "he acknowledges the black man as a human like himself"， that creates some "woof" moments for me。Overall， I recommend this to most of my fantasy reading friends - and if you like The Witcher， you will LOVE these stories， but can't recommend it to just anyone。 。。。more

Conan might be his more famous creation， but there's something about Robert E。 Howard's Solomon Kane that's always tugged at my imagination。 Perhaps it's my familiarity with the fantasy roleplaying image of the grim "witch hunter" character， popularized by the likes of Warhammer。 With the tall hat and austere clothing， the witch hunter's a clear pastiche of Kane， and I finally decided to delve into these stories to see the origins of this trope。 I was wary that Solomon's tales hadn't aged well， Conan might be his more famous creation， but there's something about Robert E。 Howard's Solomon Kane that's always tugged at my imagination。 Perhaps it's my familiarity with the fantasy roleplaying image of the grim "witch hunter" character， popularized by the likes of Warhammer。 With the tall hat and austere clothing， the witch hunter's a clear pastiche of Kane， and I finally decided to delve into these stories to see the origins of this trope。 I was wary that Solomon's tales hadn't aged well， since this is the first Robert E。 Howard collection that I've read。 But on the language front， at least， Howard's usage of words is pulpy as hell， with his action sequences providing plenty of "gotta turn the page" thrills。 Solomon himself also makes for an engrossing protagonist， especially due to Puritan fanaticism that becomes increasingly strained the longer he adventures， particularly during trips to Africa where he delves deeper and deeper into so-called "pagan" magic。With mention of the African setting， I should point out that many of the stories here are racist。 Based on what I've heard about the Conan tales， Howard frequently used race as a shorthand in his work， and his flawed bio-essentialist beliefs come across in both the narration as well as Solomon Kane's internal monologues。 Expect to see plenty of sentences equating Black Africans with barbarism， and if anything hasn't aged well in these tales， it's this。And yet。 The African stories in this collection - specifically "Red Shadows，" "The Moon of Skulls，" "Hills of the Dead" and "Wings in the Night" - outnumber the tales that take place with Kane on his home turf of Europe。 They're also far more interesting， since as I mentioned before， one DOES get the sense that Kane undergoes a slow （very slow） transition in his perception of African peoples。 Compare how he views them as largely subhuman in "Red Shadows" to how he eventually befriends the priest N'Longa （to the point of calling him a blood brother） and takes it upon himself to save a village in "Wings in the Night。" Yes， he does fall into the white savior trope， but one has to wonder if Howard himself became slightly more nuanced in his thoughts on non-white peoples over the course of writing these tales。 Biographies say that he did， and one can conceivably see Solomon Kane's changing attitudes as sort of a mirror of the author himself in this respect。 （Though Howard's final monologue in "Wings of the Night" - about the Aryan warrior standing strong and surpassing all other peoples - comes eerily close to sounding like a Neo-Nazi speech， so your mileage may vary。）With that said， I give Solomon Kane's travels five stars simply because they hold up as entertaining pulp and have fragments of racial nuance here and there - which isn't much by 21st century standards， but is above some of the other weird tales produced during the 30s， including Lovecraft's work。 For readers capable of looking past Howard and Kane's prejudices， this anthology of adventures about the original witch hunter himself is worth a read。 。。。more

The Savage Tales of Solomon Kane is an omnibus of all the Solomon Kane stories written by Robert E。 Howard。 It also comes with a great short biography of Howard at the end which actually helped me to appreciate Howard more as an author。 In short， I think some of these stories are great， some。。。not so much， but overall I enjoyed reading this omnibus。All of these short stories were originally written for the literary magazines which were all the rage back in the 1920's and 30's。 Luckily they were The Savage Tales of Solomon Kane is an omnibus of all the Solomon Kane stories written by Robert E。 Howard。 It also comes with a great short biography of Howard at the end which actually helped me to appreciate Howard more as an author。 In short， I think some of these stories are great， some。。。not so much， but overall I enjoyed reading this omnibus。All of these short stories were originally written for the literary magazines which were all the rage back in the 1920's and 30's。 Luckily they were mostly meant to be stand-alone stories so reading one by itself wouldn't leave the reader lost， unlike the literary magazines that were so popular with the 19th century French。 This is part of the sword & sorcery genre that was popularized by Howard's other work Conan the Cimmerian。 Solomon Kane is not Conan though。 He is a Puritan who goes around helping people in exotic places around the world。 Mostly in Africa， with brief trips to parts of Europe。 Solomon Kane as a character is pretty interesting。 He is a Puritan， but faith is rarely talked about other than to make some historical allusion， which I was pretty disappointed by。 It would have been interesting to see faith explored in these stories， but that wasn't there main point。The main point is Solomon Kane using his fervor and belief in his own cause in order to spur him on to defeat the terrible enemies that he fights。 The villains aren't really well developed， usually being the mustache-twirrling type。 But the real strength comes in Howard's writing and description of these fantastical places and his ability to pull on history and mythology to really create fascinating worlds and characters in conception。 As someone who reads a lot of history I was always impressed when he would do this and I consider it incredibly impressive when he lived in an age when knowing these things would take meaningful research in a library。 These stories， as juvenal as they sometimes are， were very important and shaped a whole generation of fantasy stories which still runs through today。 This collection opens with a letter by H。P。 Lovecraft where Lovecraft praises Howard for his writing and ability to weave stories together that were entertaining and challenging。 I would agree with Lovecraft。 Howard is impressive and there is certainly a lot here to get if you want to improve your writing。One thing I'd like to briefly mention is that Howard， for all of this greatness， was fairly racist in his writing。 Which you will pick up on the more you read。 The short biography at the end helped me to understand this quite well as Howard detested slavery after hearing stories about it from former slaves， but certainly had that colonial， patronizing racism that was endemic at the time。 You see this crop up in the stories， though Howard has Kane breaking this racist order in many respects rather than solidifying it。 He would get cancelled today， but I think a mindful critic would be able to preserve the good here rather than having it be overshadowed by the bad。All in all， good omnibus， good writing。 I'm interested in getting to Conan at some point to see how it compares。 Worth reading if you want to read the important works of fantasy and fiction writing in general。 。。。more
